Miami, FL – March 20, 2024 – Miami has secured a significant win with an $83 million project, The Underdeck, thanks to a sizable grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The initiative, set to transform the space underneath the new Signature Bridge, marks a historic milestone for Miami, boasting the largest grant ever received by the city, as Mayor Francis Suarez proudly announced. The $60 million federal grant falls under the DOT’s Neighborhood Access and Equity program, specifically designed to rectify past highway construction issues. Commissioner Christine King emphasized the transformative nature of this project, highlighting the disruption caused by the existing I-395 highway and the promise of revitalization that The Underdeck brings to the area. Envisioned as a 33-acre expanse beneath and around the forthcoming Signature Bridge, slated for completion in 2027, The Underdeck will feature a one-mile-long trail catering to pedestrians, joggers, cyclists, and scooters. The project, spearheaded by Hargreaves Jones, includes a Signature Pedestrian Bridge at its core and a host of amenities like recreational areas, a water feature, sports courts, and even a dog park.
